About him
A few weeks ago, turning 70, I remembered a porter in the geriatric mental hospital where I worked each summer holiday. At 19, I had thought, "I want to be like him when I grow up". Charlie's job was to collect the smelly wet and soiled bed linen from each locked ward (like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest). But where others might have grumbled, he was *content*.
Sociable, with a ready smile, he spoke with everyone, passing messages (no phones then) and bringing stuff for the subordinate nurses and carers who were also locked in. He had made the job his own. A gentle ray of sunshine in that otherwise troubled place.
While I was making other plans, fifty years passed. I had long forgotten about Charlie, so I was surprised to realise my wish had come true! Somehow, I had become like him. It just took me longer.
I have been lucky enough to enjoy 38 years happily married with 3 lovely children. (All my wife's doing!) I love talking with people, and recognize that the gift is in listening. I read, meditate, walk, have tried a few languages, played several instruments and even won a couple of painting competitions.
Seven years since my last holiday, I spent three weeks this September with friends in Canada. Thanks to them, I see my future with new eyes. Might you want to join me, exploring this thing called Life together?
