I've known Martin since moving to Usk in 2011. He often passed my garden walking the Usk Castle dog exchanging a warm hello, and then one day we discovered a (weird!) mutual interest in the 1960's automatic landing system of the Trident airliner. Such is how good friendships are formed. Chats, drinks and pub meals followed, all relaxed with conversation ranging from the fascinatingly technical to simple everyday fun.
Martin is, above all, the perfect gentleman - pleasant, a good voice, considerate, interested, well-educated but not at all stuffy. He works hard too, in his mid-80's, importing and selling his own brilliant invention, most impressive. And he can cook!
He loves his culture, but don't be frightened if you don't feel that you are his equal in that respect. Martin never looks down on anyone and, should you be interested, he'll encourage you into his cultural world.
A word about his wife of 50+ years. She too was a friend of mine, and our little local choir sang at her heartwarming funeral. That was five years ago. I can absolutely guarantee that Martin really is over that now and will not be looking for his lovely former wife in any new partner. Or indeed, new friend - and don't be put off if all you want is friendship and companionship, but please do make it clear at the outset or soon after.
Finally, Martin lives a delightful and very clean and tidy stone cottage, modern but traditional, almost in the shadow of Usk Castle. Right on the doorstep are both the little town itself and delightful walking into the Monmouthshire countryside, a real treat.
